Nickodemus' MOON PEOPLE starts off with the Afro-Colombian dub-electro of "Under the Volcano," showing us that he's ready for another international trip. The tracks here are even more of a melting pot, from the Bollywood hip-hop of the title track to the North African roots-breaks of "Alkebulan." The steel pans that ride atop the beats of "Peaceful Island Life" get a boost from Belleruche's Kathrin deBoer, while a Latin horn sections perk up "The Nuyorican Express" and "Conmigo." Jose Marquez gives a Middle Eastern flair to his mix of "Under The Volcano," while the guitar on "Los Tarantos" is pure Spain (though not without its own Moorish influence) and "Vino People" brings in the Balkans. But on my two favorite tracks, "Alruccabah" offers a lovely flow, with a humming chorus drifting in the background and bursting out of the clouds periodicially, while "Mirage" has a lounge-soul delicacy that's buoyed by Kissey Asplund's vocals. The moon is full on this album.
